Motif Development/Creative Task

 Motif Development/Creative Task

For the past few weeks, I have started to focus on my creative process and noted sections on the areas of the 'Venus de Milo' statue and what movement I could create from it.

1) The statue itself - create movement without the use of the arms.

2) The position of the statue - from the head to the feet.

3) The texture of the statue - smooth areas, rough, sharp areas?

I've decided to start the process by executing a choreography technqiue we learnt in class. This is where we perform movements leading with a certain body part for example; the foot leads the movement or the hips. When I started choreographing this section in particular, I found it quite difficult moving with my arms behind my back as I found myself either repeating movements as I felt limited or kept using the upper body to move as I was definetly overthinking the fact that I couldn't use my arms. From this choreographic technique, I can focus on all the body parts instead of worrying about not using my arms for my movement, therefore I have decided to use my feet, my hips, my shoulders and my head to lead the movement and so far it's been very successful.

As well as this, I focused into the resources that we have been provided throughout this term and found an area in Kate Flatt's 'Choreography - Creating and Developing Dance for Performance' where it related to my stimulus perfectly as well as it helping me in ideas when it comes to creating movement. There was a task presented where it showed an image of 'The Thinker' by Auguste Rodin and lists a number of points to allow yourself to question for an example; what the material is made from, what you think the dominant feeling the scultpure expresses. It also continues to state how you can translate the following questions into movement such as a sense of gravity resulting in having perhaps suspension, lightness or density in your movement, as well as the symmetry, asymmetry and the use of directions through the space. In my own personal time, I did this task basing it off the 'Venus de Milo' scultpure so I could use as a starting point on my movement and motif's.

ATTACH NOTES OF TASK

During the half term break, I took a trip down to London and used some of the time I had in the area to get inspiration and ideas based off other statues and sculptures that I saw there. From these I could take note of their position/pose and the different textures to them all.
